Eye Symptoms In Chinese Children Hospitalized With Covid-19
A new study finds that nearly a quarter of Chinese Children Hospitalized With COVID-19 developed ocular symptoms.
Dr. Fagang said, “Among 216 children hospitalized with COVID-19 in Wuhan, China, 49 (22.7%) had ocular manifestations including conjunctival discharge, eye rubbing, and conjunctival congestion.” He added, “Children with systemic symptoms or cough were more likely to develop ocular symptoms, which were mild and recovered or improved by minimal eye-drops or self-healing.”
In most of the cases, ocular symptoms were preceded by systemic manifestations. But in 9 cases, ocular manifestations were the first signs of COVID-19.
Dr. Douglas Fredrick, a professor of ophthalmology and pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and chief of pediatric ophthalmology at the Mount Sinai Health system, said that viral illnesses of most types can involve mucus membranes and reapiratory tracts. He added that As the eyes are physically connected with nose and throat, virus has passageway from mouth, nose, and throat to eyes.
