Experimental Phace III trial suggest, Varenicline is effective for Dry eye when squirted nasally. According to Dr Michael Raizman, MD, an associate professor of ophthalmology at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts, it stimulates trigeminal nerve nasally causing patient to sneeze and simultaneously eyes to tear. Unlike conventional dry eye treatment, Oyster Point’s OC-01 does not irritate eyes. It acts faster, within 14 days compared to 3-6 months of conventional dry eye treatment.

Raizman presented the findings from the ONSET-2 phase 3 trial at the virtual Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) 2021 annual meeting.

Varenicline is prescribed to reduce cigarette cravings as oral drug Chantix by Pfizer. Administered as a nasal spray for dry eye, much less of it ends up in the bloodstream, Raizman said.
