“Liquid Lenses”- made up of liquid glycerine enclosed between two rubber membranes in a frame can adjust focus based on where the wearer wants to focus.

The glasses (battery powered for 24 hour work time) are connected to a smartphone app wirelessly and can be individually customised according to patients prescriptions, changing with time. Mechanical actuators attached to the rear membrane adjust the curvature of the liquid lens electronically, based on infrared technology encased in frame. The lenses can adjust automatically as per the wearers need in less than 14 milliseconds.

Similarly, smart contact lenses and fluid based lens implant for cataract patients that responds to muscle movement in the eye to change shape and focus on objects are also in pipeline.
